Decompile a classic game into byte-exact C++ with a fleet of agents
Maurice Heumann and a few volunteers ran up to 16 Claude Code and Codex agents for three months to rebuild an old first-person shooter as readable, compilable C++. Agents used a disassembler MCP, tracked one GitHub issue per translation unit and talked to each other and humans in a Discord channel that also received CI failures. The first month's output ran but was quietly wrong, because the reviewer agent accepted the workers' explanations, so it was thrown away and the reviewer replaced with a byte-matching check that compiles each file with the original compiler and compares every function to the shipped binary. With that objective pass/fail test and an hourly instruction refresh to curb drift, they report 99% of functions reconstructed and 83% byte-exact.
